Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo is on track to accomplish one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory. With 10 games to go, Perdomo has a chance to achieve these milestones for the 2025 season.

  • 20 home runs
  • 25 stolen bases
  • 30 doubles
  • 100 RBI
  • 100 runs scored
  • 100 walks
  • Fewer than 100 strikeouts

Such a season has only been accomplished seven times in the entire history of Major League Baseball. Barry Bonds did it four times, along with Joe Morgan, Chipper Jones, and José Ramírez. Those are four of the best players in the history of the game.

Entering play on September 17th, this is where Perdomo is at for the season.

  • 19 home runs
  • 26 stolen bases
  • 29 doubles
  • 97 RBI
  • 94 runs scored
  • 91 walks
  • 75 strikeouts

Over the final 10 games (45-50 PA), he'll need nine walks, a double, a home run, 3 RBI, and six runs. Should he do so, that would make him the first-ever Diamondback to accomplish that insane feat.

With Perdomo flirting with a historical season, the question is no longer about receiving MVP votes. Now the debate should be whether or not the D-backs shortstop should be a finalist in the voting (Top 3).

Geraldo Perdomo's Impact on the 2025 Diamondbacks

He leads all National League position players in Baseball Reference's Wins Above Replacement metric (bWAR), clocking in at 6.6. That's more than Pete Crow-Armstrong, Juan Soto, and Fernando Tatis Jr., who all made the All-Star team over Perdomo.

His 6.6 bWAR and 6.7 fWAR ranks sixth and fourth in franchise history, as pointed out by Preston Salisbury on X. A strong finish to the season could make him the third-ever Diamondback to post a 7.0 WAR season.

Such a season wasn't even considered a possibility. Even the rosiest scouting reports from his time as a prospect could not have predicted this.

Through the 2024 season, Perdomo had put up a career slash of .235/.327/.330 (84 OPS+). His most useful skill set then was grinding pitchers from the bottom spot in the lineup. When it worked well, he got on base in front of All-Stars Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll. His teammate, Corbin Burnes, will attest to that from his last start against Arizona.

The same lineup dynamic holds down the stretch in 2025, except now Perdomo is hitting leadoff. On August 12th, manager Torey Lovullo finally decided to alter the top third of his lineup. Since then, they are 6th in MLB in total runs scored (165). It's also translated into wins, as they are 19-13 since the change.

His impact on the team goes beyond his bat. D-backs announcer Steve Beriathume cited on air that Perdomo has the most defensive runs saved (+11) since the break. That was a note he got from Sports Information Solutions themselves.

But perhaps his biggest contribution of the season came off the field. With his double play partner's off-the-field decisions under scrutiny, he defended his teammate. No one asked him to do that, and it solidified him as the leader of this squad.

Geraldo Perdomo Spearheads the Core Four

The D-backs are in a good spot with their starting shortstop. They signed him to a four-year, $45 million extension back in February. Following his offensive breakout, it is now one of the most team-friendly contracts in the game.

Considering the deals that Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, and Justin Martinez got, it's a very high bar to clear.

Combined with the mini-breakout from catcher Gabriel Moreno, the D-backs have four All-Star-caliber hitters. Those four hitters anchor the top of the lineup on a nightly basis and are under team control through at least the 2028 season. As a result, I label Perdomo, Marte, Carroll, and Moreno as the "Core Four" of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Core Four played a significant role in the team's run to the World Series in 2023. History may just repeat itself two years later.
