Drey Jameson Lights Up the Gun in First AFL Outing
Drey Jameson made his first appearance in the Fall League. In what amounts to a rehab assignment, the hard-throwing right-hander had his top velocity.
SCOTTSDALE – The Salt River Rafters opened up their season with a 7-3 victory over the Glendale Desert Dogs.
Drey Jameson made his first appearance in the Fall League. In what amounts to a rehab assignment, the hard-throwing right-hander had his top velocity. He fired his first pitch at 97.8 MPH (sinker), then bullied overmatched hitters with 98-99 MPH four-seamers. He got a chase on his slider that resulted in a ground ball he took to first base unassisted.
Jameson faced three hitters, retiring them all on ground ball outs. He threw eight pitches, five for strikes. He was credited with the win when Charlie Condon drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh.
Nice, clean 7th inning for Drey Jameson.

The fact that Jameson not only was able to throw the ball well, from both a velocity and command standpoint, is important. With a lot of open spots in the bullpen next spring, the right-hander should have a solid chance of making the club.
Jansel Luis had five plate appearances from the leadoff spot, going 0-for-3 but reaching base twice. He grounded out three times to the right side of the infield. His hardest-hit ball came off the bat at 109.2 MPH.
He was hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance and drew a walk in his third. Luis checked off a 99.7 MPH fastball that Braves prospect Jhancarlos Lara yanked below the zone on a 3-1 count.
Defensively, he had two chances to show off at third base. He looked solid in both. The first was a pickle drill, in which Luis Perales caught Jim Jarvis edging off second base and threw to third. Luis chased Jarvis back to second, making the threw to Stanley Tucker to retire Glendale's third baseman.
The other came in the sixth. With a runner at first, Luis fielded a slow ground ball hit down the line. He was quickly able to backhand and threw a strike to second base to nearly pull off an impossible double play. His actions look good for third base, which could be his defensive home in the future.

Other Prospect/Fall League Notes
The Rockies' Jared Thomas had a big game at the plate. He split both gaps, recording a double in the first and an RBI triple in the 8th.
Jameson wasn't the only fireballer in the game. Red Sox prospect Luis Perales started the game and was regularly hitting triple digits. Jhancarlos Lara of the Braves also came in with gas, topping out at 100.3 MPH.
Charlie Condon showed why he was the No. 3 overall pick. All five balls he put into play registered an exit velocity north of 95.0 MPH, including three over 100. His first base defense is something left to be desired, as he botched an inning-ending double play in the sixth that led to two runs scoring.
Esmerlyn Valdez and Juan Flores crushed home runs on the day. Valdez's came off the bat at 108 MPH and Flores 103.8.
Home plate umpire Willie Traynor had four ball/strike calls challenged. All four challenges came from the hitters, who went 1-for-4 on the day.
Check swing challenges are also in the fall league, although no one challenged. The general rule is 45 degrees, typically even with the baseline from home plate.
