D-backs Under Review is an independent publication I launched in August 2024, upon realizing that I wasn't going to make a difference as a beat reporter. Originally on Substack under the moniker "Mike's Hardball Talk", I rebranded the publication to focus on the institutional knowledge I've earned over the past decade.
I've been writing about the Arizona Diamondbacks since the 2015 season. Over the past decade, I've had the opportunity to cover major league games, work with previous analysts who worked in the baseball operations department, ask players and key personnel questions, and develop a better understanding how the game works from the inside. I once asked Torey Lovullo a question about Ryne Nelson pitching in a Spring Training game that blew his mind about the level of detail based on what I saw on a TV broadcast.
While I've likely covered my last game at Chase Field on June 16, 2024, the goal is to share what I've learned with the rest of the world. It's my way of paying back the time people have invested in me and challenged me to be better.
What I plan to do with D-backs Under Review is live in that space between news cycles and games, to create value in an underserved space. What you'll find here is the best analysis of the latest performance trends, providing much-needed context to news, farm system coverage, or providing opinions at the micro and macro level. We're going to do it all.
